GreenLight Laser Therapy

GreenLight laser therapy removes an overgrowth of prostate tissue using a small laser fiber passed through a cystoscope into the urethra. The laser vaporizes the enlarged tissue, leaving a wide-open channel for urine flow. Performed at the hospital; typically no overnight stay.

After the hospital

  • You'll go home with a catheter in place for up to a week, based on your surgeon's recommendation. The office will call to schedule its removal.
  • Avoid strenuous activity and lifting more than 10 pounds for 2 weeks.
  • Irritative urinary symptoms — frequency, urgency, burning — are common for a few weeks and can last up to 3 months.
  • Small amounts of blood in the urine can occur. If it happens, increase fluids and stay off your feet until your urine clears.
  • If you can't urinate, sitting in a warm tub may help you start your stream.
  • The office will contact you to schedule catheter removal and a one-month follow-up.
