You don't need to keep waiting
Peyronie's disease is a buildup of scar tissue — called plaque — in the penis that causes it to curve or bend, most noticeably during an erection. It can also cause pain, a sense of shortening, or difficulty with intimacy. It's more common than most men realize, it's not your fault, and it is treatable. Many men wait years before mentioning it to anyone. You don't need to.
How we evaluate it
The visit is a conversation and a focused exam — we'll ask when the curvature began, whether it's still changing, whether there's pain, and how it's affecting you. Timing matters: Peyronie's typically moves through an early active phase, when the plaque is still forming and things may still be changing, into a stable phase. Which phase you're in shapes which treatments make sense, so part of our job is simply establishing where things stand.
Treatment — including Xiaflex, here on the Cape
We offer Xiaflex, the only FDA-approved medication for Peyronie's disease. It works by breaking down the collagen in the plaque itself, treating the cause of the curve rather than just the symptoms. It's a course of injections given in our office, spaced days apart, with gentle stretching of the tissue between rounds. Most men have up to four rounds, depending on how the curve responds. It works best for men with a curve of about thirty degrees or more and a lump you can feel — the evaluation sorts that out.
Xiaflex isn't the answer for every man. For severe curvature, complex cases, or when Peyronie's occurs alongside erectile dysfunction, surgical options — from straightening procedures to penile implants — may be the better path, and our surgeons manage the full range. Whatever the right answer is, you'll hear it straight, along with what each option realistically achieves.
